Shinnecock Nation is Federally Recognized

The Shinnecock Nation has finally won after enduring the long, tiring, process to fight for federal recognition. As Sam Cooke used to sing, “It’s Been a Long Time Coming, but a Change Gone Come.”

Glad to see that the media is recognizing this momentous occasion, though I wish that more of the public and the media would notice that federal recognition means more than the possibility of casinos. Recognition is respect, sovereignty, potential for expanded healthcare, housing and services for members of the community (and often surrounding Native neighbors), legal options, cultural pride and so much more.

Congratulations.
